have this dime but not sure if the deep scratches were made at the same time as when the coin was minted obviously broad strike but could the damage have been done at the same time?

What you are calling a broad strike is just more post-Mint damage.

so I am thinking someone pounded the edge of the coin with a hammer for whatever reason? maybe held it with pliers making the scratches?

with kanga. It's not an error coin, it's just Post Strike Damage. The coin is 90% silver, so it's worth the melt value of $1.30 with silver at $17.96, but that's if it still weighs 2.5 grams.
