ironhorse Valued Member Canada 363 Posts	Posted 01/17/2020 11:34 am Part of my wintertime research projects is to research some counterstamped coins in my collection...mainly to see if any can be attributed to a person/ business..etc First one: basic info...silver with both sides smoothed off host coin, letter S P D stamped in, 4.00g, although not perfectly round diameter is 25mm best measurement What I do know...found metal detecting a colonial site in Atlantic Canada of British origin dating roughly 1790s to 1830s thereabouts; I'm guessing it's a UK token but could be from anywhere Thanks for any input from the community For what it's worth I posted the backside even though it appears smooth Report this Post to the Staff

ExoGuy Pillar of the Community United States 4415 Posts	Posted 01/18/2020 7:25 pm To my knowledge, the c/s is a maverick that stands an extremely slim chance of attribution. IMHO, the host coin stands a slightly better chance of being identified. The coin's diameter, 25 mm, significantly narrows the search prospects. What's the third surface like, the edge? It looks to me like there are possibly a few letters showing on the periphery of what you're calling the reverse. Some close-up pics of those two areas might help? Report this Post to the Staff

ironhorse Valued Member Canada 363 Posts	Posted 01/19/2020 11:27 am to Exoguy thanks for responding my initial thoughts on this was exactly what you said, a maverick that's very obscure also, I never thought about the edge profile (which I will use from now on) the coin is thin...the out of roundness may have been caused by flattening a thicker smaller diameter coin to a larger diameter but thinner planchet to counterstamp for use...only speculation on my part here; more knowledge of their manufacture would help me more perhaps I also agree there may be remnants of a legend left on the edges but the corrosion does play tricks on your eyes sometimes and creates illusion in pictures; of course an in-hand coin can look different I've looked closer with a loupe but couldn't distinguish any recognizable letters/words and took another pic but I am limited to the capabilities of my cell phone so it is what it is lol thickness compared to a 1970s Canadian 25 cents Report this Post to the Staff
