I have a 1965 half dollar that I originally thought was shot by a bullet. I searched for othe coins that were shot and the coins look nothing like the one I have. Most of the coins had a hole in them. This makes me wonder if the coin I have is one shot by a bullet or possibly a mint error? Any input would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

To the CCF Has to be some sort of damage. That is impossible to happen during the striking of the coin which is the only time a mint error can occur.

Though it does seem to look like it was struck by a bullet. Right down to the dimple in the middle. Perhaps it had a low velocity so it wrapped the coin around itself instead of penetrating through it.

low velocity round. Maybe a .22 short out of a small handgun? .22 short doesn't have much power as a cartridge to begin with, and out of a short barrel is less than useless.

The stuff in the dimple looks like lead. Is the bullet still squished in there? The center circle part looks like the back end of a bullet that didn't deform. What does the other side look like?

To Me it looks like a .22 hollow point hit it.

Some powerful air rifles with large .22 cal led bullet will cause that effect , all depends on the distance the shot was fired from. It definitely was hit by a bullet and the coin was placed on a soft background surface, like plywood.

How does one come across a coin shot by a bullet? Either you found this in scrap (or someone else did) or someone you know did the shooting. Bottom line is, it's a shame another coin is lost. to the CCF!

I have to agree with justcarl I can't imagine a bb or 22 cal would be powerful enough. A SW40 would put a good dent in it with a flat nose round. But not that extreme. I think justcarl is right.
