Hello,

I have 2 questions, my first question is generally about local coin dealers. If my local coin dealer can't get me the coins and supplies I need how long should I wait before looking elsewhere?

Second, I'm reading two books, "The Red Book" and "Coin Collecting for Dummies" I'm having a hard time reading about what I'm not interested in and what I'll never collect, is this bad? I want to eventually read both books all the way through but both books seem more like reference too.

Any opinions or help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Rich

I dont think that is bad at all... You can help if you are not interested in certain coins.. Good job getting your research done

B&M(brick and mortar) dealers usually have new coins coming in all the time but they do not always everything that everyone is looking for. In that case, you need to turn to coin shows or online retailers. As for supplies, if you dealer does not have what you want, you might want to ask if they could order it for you. I also listed several reputable suppliers in another of your posts.

I also remember that you mentioned in another post that you liked commemoratives so here is another book idea for you-Guide Book of US Commemoratives

I have seen this book at Barnes and Noble before and it is available at Amazon and many other book sites.

Is it bad? No, Read in depth on those series you are interested in, but skimming the other material is not a bad idea. And you never know when your interests will change and you many find yourself collecting something you thought you would "never collect". And you may eventually find as your knowledge grows that you develop interests in knowing things about series and coins that you aren't going to collect. SO hang onto the books. I find the stories behind a lot of different coins fascinating and I read books on many coins and series that I don't collect. But there are some series that I don't find easy to read about. I still try to get a general understanding about them though.

I can't say about Coin Collecting for Dummies as I have not read the book, butthe RedBook IS a reference book.
