Found this one while CRH and looking for input on what caused this. The dark part is lower than the rest of the coin. My initial thought is acid or some other corrosive substance ate away the metal, but the devices don't show the level of deterioration I would expect if that was true. There appears to be a die break running along the eagle's left leg. I dipped this in acetone to remove any as much crud as possible, but it did not make much difference. All input is welcome. Thanks!

To me it looks like a stain on the coin.

I agree, but if it is just a stain I don't understand is why the stained area is recessed?

If recessed, then the liquid would have been acidic to eat away at the nickel. It ate the top part of the nickel layer, but not deep enough to show copper?
