A rather common year Peace dollar. Like always, the grade on the holder is the grade I assigned to it about the time I bought it, between 3 and 4 years ago. Looking at it now, I'm thinking it might be a AU-53 ..... but then again in this year and mint mark, one notch up makes little difference.

What do you think?

P.S. As you can see it has some dirt. And I've heard the mantra about never clean coins a hundred times, IIIIIIIII get it. And I know that dipping in acetone is OK to remove PVC and tape residues and grease and oils, but what about just plain dirt? This coin will never be a valuable coin, but if it was at least clean it would look better, so along with your opinions about grade on this coin, what are some of your opinions about dealing with that dirt?

AU-53, perhaps 55, sounds about right.

Obverse looks MS or close, reverse looks a little weak. AU 58

If it's just dirt, sometimes a soak in distilled water with a little soap. Rub (lightly) under water with your thumb. Rinse and pat dry. If it's a gummier substance, acetone might work. Acetone dries so fast there is no need to dry it. Last resort, you could try a coin dip, mixed 50/50 with distilled water. But coin dips can sometimes cause more problems than they solve.

decent luster. overall she looks like she would be in the AU55 range. I think the reverse strike may keep it from going higher.
