This one has me completely stumped ! Can anyone please help ? Very simple victorian crowned "VR"countermark on what appears to be an otherwise a blank copper disc. Reverse is heavily corroded, but appears originally to have been completely blank. Measures 5/8 inch wide (17 mm) and weighs just 2.8 grammes on my scales. Probably British Empire (India ?) rather than British Isles, but this is only a guess. The crown appears to date from circa 1840-1850. If you need any further information, please ask.

My first thoughts are it's not a coin....my guess is it's a piece off the front of an old padlock ...the cover of the keyhole
heres a similar one, they come in many variations
hope this helps

Dear Ironhorse, many thanks for your response. I think your lateral thinking is pretty much spot on. If you look at the counmarked side you can see rough sections at 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock, where sections of metal have been snapped off (originally I thought these were just roughness at the edge), which leads me to suspect that this "coin" originally actually part of an official security band of some sort. Might have passed as an unofficial token in one of the poorer parts of the empire (came to me in a box of worn Indian Victorian coins), just as worn flattened buttons are known to have circulated in Ireland as tokens during the coinage shortage at the end of the 18th century. Anyw mystys solved. Once again, many thanks.
