Any help identifying this would be appreciated. My dad just bought this near Jerusalem. (I wouldn't be shocked if it were a fake, but I know almost nothing about ancients.)
Severus Alexander, AR Denarius. AD 229. Obverse..IMP SEV ALEXAND AVG, laureate head right. Reverse..P M TR P VIII COS III P P, Mars standing right, holding reversed spear and resting left hand on shield. RIC 91; RSC 364; Sear -. Ref...wildwinds...Thanks
As for as genuine or not , it looks to be OK, however a shot of the edge of the coin would help. Always tough to tell from photos, unless they are obvious fakes and in this case, I don't think so.
Most likely the "real deal" But always keep in mind There are two ways to get 'hosed' ! A scam artist can sell you a fake Or ........ The uninformed buyer can seriously overpay for a relatively common item In this case the denarius in this condition might often be acquired for under $20 With patience closer to ten Jerusalem being a tourist haven ..... Well Sometimes you need not go into the water to find "sharks" !
