Copper: Actual Weight 6.42-6.56 mintage 47,229,000 Bronze: Actual weight 4.76-4.99 mintage 115,786,000 To differenciate: A) coins minted in copper are thick while lminted in bronze are thin . sel_69l Bedrock of the Community Australia 21788 Posts	Posted 02/24/2020 5:45 pm I have never been able to figure out why MS red or red/bn examples of 1/4 ANNA's Victoria to George V1 are relatively easy to find. With these:- copper:- all of the beard detail is there, so no wear, MS-63 red/bn, COMMENT:- obverse 'carbon' staining, bronze:- all of the beard detail is there, so no wear, MS-61 red/bn, COMMENTS:- scratch above and behind ear (obverse), 'carbon' staining (reverse). For 3 years these coins were minted from Copper but in 1906, due to the increased price in Copper, they were substituted with Bronze. All were minted at Calcutta. They are not really 'carbon', but actually a water insoluble inorganic complex of copper oxide / sulfide heavy localized toning. Cannot be removed by acetone. Report this Post to the Staff
