I recently went to an ATM in the hope of getting some of the new polymer £20 notes. I succeeded in getting 3, brand new, from the machine. What has caught my eye is that the serial numbers end 691, 692 and 695 - missing out 693 and 694. I'd have thought that if a new brick was loaded into the machine, notes would be given out consecutively? What happened to 693 and 694? Is it that the machine just mixed the notes a bit (is this possible?) or is there some other explanation?

Many thanks

Two possibilities:
A) yes, tellers do put the notes through the counters (& yes they do get mixed up) so could be that or
B) Notes "__693" & "__694" were culled & destroyed/recycled because they didn't pass inspection. Computers now inspect Serial Numbered notes and if they fall outside of certain specific tolerances they will be discarded and not released. At one time replacement notes were substituted but that is no longer the case here in Canada (& I imagine that would be the same in the UK).

I did consider that it could be that they were culled/destroyed, if so that's quite interesting (I wonder if there were many that were faulty). I assumed that they were just loaded in in cassettes without any human really intervening, since they were brand new?
