I don't have the 19C. Krause catalogue, so if anyone here would be so kind to lookup the 1896 5 Pennia in terms of mintage and value in F,VF,XF I would really appreciate it!

Sure thing it had a mintage of 410,000 and is $2 in F, $10 in VF, and $50 in EF.

19th century coins from Finland are indeed quite fascinating pieces.

I have a more local and recent catalogue, printed in Denmark for the nordic countries. In it F, VF and XF is given as DKK 40, 200 and 800 respectively. One USD roughly estimates to six DKK (slightly below last I checked), so we have something in the proximity of $7, $35 and $135, even though the fast movements in the currency market can change these quickly. In any case we see clearly that Krause is undervaluing Finnish coins. You will never be able to buy any of them here if you offer no more than full Krause value.

A fact on the side, a lot of dealers list Finnish coins pre-1917 under the Russian section (which is very popular) - so if you look for these you won't find them under Finland.

Thanks Litotes for a more accurate market price. The same disparity exists for Australian coins I collect, where local dealers price against Krause--to my advantage. And thanks for converting the currency--that tracks closely to what I see.

yes krause does undervalue many Scandinavian coins. But that is a good thing because that means you can get them lot cheaper in some cases.

Hi Kurts I will check with a few people I deal with overseas and ask them. what books are the best for Scandinavian coins and their values. I really only have a few catalogs with prices for Icelandic coins right now because that is what I am focusing on. but I will be happy to check it out for you. Before Icelandic coins it was just US coins I was collecting.

If you want a good catalogue for the Nordic countries, "Siegs Møntkatalog" is the one to buy. Produced in Denmark, It contains Denmark 1533-dd, Norway 1700-dd, Sweden 1809-dd, Finland 1864-dd and Iceland 1922-dd. It also contains complete mintage of all the Danish colonies: Faroe Islands, Greenland, Danish West Indies and Trankebar.

I am not sure how easy this is to get hold of outside Scandinavia though. You can email the publisher if you want to, at "siegs@siegs.eu". Most Danes have no problem understanding English.

Here's a photo--the color was hard to capture, but it's close. It has a rim bump and some surface planchet defects, but nice overall details.
Here the photo looks a bit bright and washed out, but the real color looks original to me.
