Firstly I am new here , I am an Aussie over 55 years so I do not have decades to build up a collection of coins nor banknotes to increase in value.

I am an average guy and thus I have a limited budget so I have had to make some policy guidelines to put together a coherent collection, either for resale later if I need to or to give to my grand kids.

If I am going to go to work for money I want that money to give me pleasure , my collection needs to reflect this overall and generally out-compete most other collections simply by its design ; even collections accumulated by richer people than myself.

I am not competing with others by simply aiming to have true perfection that out competes almost any other items if or when I must sell.

The obvious answer is simple ; gold coins. Gold coins never deteriorate once they are encapsulated, after all gold is gold ! ! ! By this I mean pure gold like .9999 that has no impurities to discolor over time.

So those coins need to be slabbed simply to prove to another it is a real coin and has a grade of 70. Thus I can show a potential buyer there are only eg 8 percent of a minting that have been graded and only 57 or 192 have received a grading of 70.

So on a limited budget what to aim to acquire? Simple , Every graded 9999 pure gold coin ever made in 1/10th or 1/4 ounce.

Like a worldwide set, that have awesome artwork ; the 1/10 oz have a higher buyers premium for the smaller size and their diameter is about the size of your fingernail. It is hard to impress someone when showing them scarce artwork and they cannot picture the image due to a small size of the 1/10 coin.

So for tiny 1/10 coins I seek larger sized images. The 1/10th oz allows me shop and buy and build my collection to keep it progressing.

But mainly it is to allow others to have the ready cash to buy a 1/10 coin without taking out a second mortgage :)

The 1/4 oz pure gold coin is aimed at a artwork buyer, simply I cannot afford a half ounce very often but the 1/4 oz has enough size to showcase images.

But the aim is to have numerous small coins I can more regularly obtain and offload if I need to, especially in a faster type of sale.

If I had a full ounce buffalo or maple I would simply lose so much motivation if I had to sell such a gem and how long to await to buy it initially, especially as your saving your watching the price of gold move ;)

So now I have over and ounce of gold and about eight different pictures in 1/10 and 1/4 oz sizes.

All graded 70 by PCGS or NGC , so this gives a nice foundation to build upon and easy proof these are real coins and graded professionally by experts.

Thus it is easy to get a valuation as bullion and to try and sell in small parcels if needed.

Again collect what you like , but make sure it has some sort of appeal overtime and is not just a passing fad if you ever want to offload your collections.

Best of all have some strategy of hat your aiming to include in your main collection, especially overtime ! ! !

crok:- to the CCF!

The sort of collecting that you are indicating is small bullion gold.

Currently the buy / sell spread for gold is around 8%.
A bullion dealer couldn't care less if the bullion gold you may be selling back is Proof-70 or not.
Or, to put it another way, a bullion dealer will not buy back with the high premium for small gold that you may have paid for in the first place.

A coin dealer when buying back, may well have the same sort of buy back policy. No reason why coin collectors on ebay should be any different, either.

You must do your research on market conditions first, before committing to any decision to buy.

At least, if you buy from a bullion dealer and keep all receipts, you are guaranteed to buy only genuine coins, irrespective of if they are slabbed or not, and are in the best position to give that guarantee of authenticity to a prospective buyer in the future.

There is nothing wrong with buying small bullion gold in MS-68 direct from a bullion dealer, for a standard bullion price, then encapsulating them yourself, and thus avoid slabbing fees and shipping costs.

Remember: "All that glitters is not gold" - Shakespeare: Merchant of Venice
