Hello,
New to site and to forums. Not really a coin guy, but I found an 1877 Deutsches Reich 50 Pfennig coin while beachcombing off the coast of Washington state, USA, a few years ago. It appears to be made of silver, and seems to be in pretty good shape for something of that vintage. Wondering if anyone can tell me if it is rare/valuable?
Thanks!

Nice find. It is silver. It's value would also depend on the mintmark. There should be 2 letters (both the same) located on both sides of the eagle's tail.
If they're not visible, I'd say it's only bullion value.

Ja, 50Pf of that age will be Silver/Cu (50/50 If I remember right). In general, not a rarity, but as above, is based on what mintmark you have... Whilst I dont have a Jaeger nearby at the moment, I THINK in 1877, you still had mintmarks A (Berlin), C (Frankfurt), D (Muenchen), E (Muldenhuetten), F (Stuttgart), G (Karlsruhe) and J (Hamburg) entering circulation... Maybe the Hannover (B) and Darmstadt (H) were still in operation too?

But yeah, 50Pf of this age aren't that expensive unless you have a Very nice (ie, aUNC-UNC) example or a really rare year/mintmark combination. Last 50Pf and 1/2M lot I got from Germany was about 1.00-1.50EUR per coin...

1877 could be Jaeger 7 or 8. Silver (Ag 900) indeed. This is J8 http://www.emuenzen.de/galerie/data...dium/J_8.jpg and this would be the older J7 http://www.emuenzen.de/galerie/data...dium/J_5.jpg ... except that instead of the 20 it has, surprise, a "50".

Thanks Christian and Zaggy et al. It is the J8 as shown in your link, with a D at the base of the coin under the tail, just as shown in the picture. While the letters and numbers are all very clear, the crest has been worn off the eagle's chest and crown and the fine markings on the leaves, etc are worn.
I appreciate your help, and will just hold onto it as it is worth more as a story to tell than trading/selling it.
Dan
