What do you guys think? And does anyone know how to tell if this is a wide date or not?

G'day, what a beautiful example. Especially the chocolate toning.
I don't know enough to help with your question, but that coin ought to be welcome in any collection.

It's definitely welcome in mine!

This page http://www.triton.vg/H13.html lists three date varieties. I only count 15 denticles so it has to be one of the other two...

It looks like it has a little bit of rub but copious amounts of luster, AU55(maybe 58 in hand) and I love the chocolate brown
That reminds me, I need to pick up some Aussie copper- I only have silver coins

Unfortunately, I have no idea about the variety.

with biokemist6. This is a a beautiful coin--especially the color and luster! 2008 Maccas lists the 1913 ha'penny in aUNC at $300 AUD.

I see that too. However, this is not the "normal" date position, as shown on the link above. So, is it the second reverse variety? When judging the position of digits, I like to compare where they point to the inner ring of beads. Compare the "1" on your coin to the second photo in terms of where it points to the inner beads:

On your coin, the "1" points more to the center of a bead than the "9 leans right" variety--although I think the 9 on yours also leans more than "normal"! If this is confusing, I simply think your coin is a different die than the three pictured. I don't know how many dies were used for 1913, but perhaps yours could be called a "left-leaning* 1" variety?

* not a political statement

That's very interesting, Kurt.. I'll try an overlay here in a bit and see!

From overlaying the 3 different dates on this coin, it actually looks like #2, maybe an early die state before the numbers thickened? This is far from perfect, but gives you an idea:

"9 leans right" (#2) at http://www.triton.vg/H13.html, adjusted for tilt:

xshift, nice work on the animation!
Perhaps my eyes played tricks on me, and your image processing has revealed these are the same.
If I look at the two photos independently, something about the 1 seems different--but I'm unsure.
I'll take a fresh look later.

They look different to me, as well. Maybe it's like one of those optical illusions..? The numbers are much thicker on the triton coin, so may be presenting as being in a slightly different area of the coin.

Anyway.. when you we get a look with fresh eyes later, it may make more sense I've definitely been staring at it too long!
