Picked this up yesterday from my local dealer and figured I'd post it to the coin forums I frequent- it's definitely a Liberty Cap, but the date is pretty well destroyed. Any thoughts, or ways I may be able to identify it?

Start with what is the weight? I don't really see evidence of a lettered edge which would indicate it is a 95 or 96. There is almost a 2.5 gram weight difference between the letter edge and the plain edge coins so that would help to nail it down. It looks like LIBERTY may be down close to the hair which would make it a late 94 through 96.

It weighs in at 10 grams (unfortunately my kitchen scale isn't more accurate than that).

Did some image comparisons with pictures of existing coins, it looks like there's a horizontal line running into the bust almost exactly where the 5 would be on a 1795. Between that and the weight/position of Liberty that Conder101 pointed out I think that I'm satisfied knowing that this is probably a 1795 Plain Edge.

Not a particularly rare variety, but definitely a cool pickup from the cull pile.
