PCGS - There are many varieties in the Indian cent series, including doubled dies, variations in date numerals and designer initials, and the two die varieties for 1886. While the differences are slight, the key indicator is easy to spot once you know what to look for.

The last feather points between the "I" and "C" of "AMERICA" on the Variety 1, whereas on the Variety 2 it is seen pointing between the letters "C" and "A." PCGS estimates there are around 4,500 to 4,600 examples of the Variety 1 surviving across all grades, and 3,450 of Variety 2.

That small change in orientation can lead to large changes in value, record prices for each are over five figures with a Variety 1 graded PCGS MS66+RD selling for $34,075 in 2016, twice a PCGS MS66RD Variety 2 has sold for the top price $48,300, once in 2000 and once in 2009.
