I always thought that a flan crack that looks "filled in" is an indication of a cast copy. This Caracalla denarius appears to be genuine, but this flan crack doesn't look right to me.

Opinions? Does anyone have authentic examples of a crack like this?

Thats a copy and quite a common one. I have a similar coin that I hung on to just to teach myself a lesson!

Had my doubts that's why I posted. Though, I haven't found a match in any of the fake coin reports.

I wouldn't condemn it outright
It actually looks like it may be a bronze "limes" denarius
Sometimes when cleaning encrusted bronze it is best to stop when the going gets tough
Cracks are sometimes left as is rather than risk going too far and getting spots of bare metal
My opinion is that the evidence is inconclusive either way
Better pics would help !

FVRIVS, I wish I had better pics. This is being sold as a lot. The seller has always sold authentic coins, however, we all get fooled once in a while. I just haven't seen an authentic example with a cracks like this. However, I don't have many years experience as many of you on this fine forum.

I'm tempted to buy just to find out

Don't buy it. It is an obvious fake coin, from the weak, soft appearance down to the soft mould like cracks.
I buy a lot of ancient coins and get offered fakes very often and the coin you posted is definitely a copy.

OK, you are very convincing. I am siding with you that it is a fake. For some reason, I like spotting them.

If anyone one like to test their expertise: Found a challenge at:

I spotted the two authentic examples, so it can't be that hard.
