I am looking to buy my son a proof set of his birth year, so I checked both the 2009 RedBook and the Nov. 08 issue of Coins Magazine for prices. Here is what I found. Redbook1996 S Mintage (1,695,244) Issue Price: $12.50 Current Value: $18.00 Coins magazine1996 S Mintage (2,085,191) Issue Price: $16.00 Current Value: $14.00 Ok, I can understand the difference in current price between the 2 publications, but what explains the difference in mintages and issue values?

I don't know about the mintage but the November issue of COINValues has current value... Low-$14.00 High-$18.00 I think its kinda funny that BOTH numbers are represented. RedBook 2007 and 2008 all agree the issue price was $12.50.

The US Coin Facts pages list the 1996-S Clad proofs as 1,750,244: 1,695,244 regular proof sets, 55,000 prestige proof sets; pick any denomination, I chose Half Dollars. So, with a score of two to one, Coins Magazine must be wrong.

Could Coins Magazine be listing the clad proof, prestige, and silver together as one? Just a thought.

Nope, I added it all up, does not match:
Regular 1,695,244
Prestige 55,000
Silver 623,655
Premier 151,366
------------------
Total 2,525,265

I would go with the Red Book's info, they generally are proven correct.

So the score is now even! Were the mintage figures revised recently and only Coin World and Coins Magazine have picked up on it?

I don't know why the mint doesn't put proof production figures online like they do for circulated coinage.
Maybe they don't want us to know the real numbers

If your going to buy one for him, just buy it from where ever you can find one. Not sure what difference it makes how many were really made. If you can find one for a decent price, and he wants it, just get the thing for him. Or is he worried about how many were made?

Quote: Were the mintage figures revised recently I have a 2004 Krause North America Coin price guide with a figure of 2,085,191 I know if you want to buy the set it doesn't matter but it is an interesting mystery.

Oh I already bought one, actually from someone on this forum, I was just curious about the difference in information between the two publications. I can understand the current value difference, one is projected ( RedBook) and the other a little closer to correct at time of printing. I was just curious as to diffent issue prices and mintages.

Sometimes returns/no sales are melted, notable the Washington 1982 half. If you check the Red Book for a few years back, you'll see the proof mintages of early Lincolns and V nickels have changed.
