On first sight I thought this coin was Byzantine, with the capital R on the one side. Then I thought it looked like a capital R over the prow of a galley. The other side I don't recognise at all. None of my searches have turned up anything remotely similar.

The coin appears to be copper, is roughly octagonal with a diameter of approximately 22mm, and weight of 6.4gr.

Shot in the dark, but any chance the "prow" is a roman numeral IIII for a 4 maravedis coin with a counterstamp?

My first impression is a Spanish coin, but not one I can identify. Whatever it is it's an interesting looking coin.

Thanks for the replies @tdziemia and @echizento. It looks like you were both correct, and it pointed me in the right direction.

I had virtually given up on this coin, but during another search I found a page with a similar looking coin. The only one that looked even remotely similar. It was the bit that looked like the tip of a prow that convinced me, as it was almost identical, even though the rest of the coin didn't have many corresponding areas. I don't think I'll ever be able to find an exact match for what appears to be a piece of "Pirate Money". Below is the image I found on the net. Thanks again guys.

Spanish copper reale. "Pirate Money". Copper 8-Maravedis "cob" of Philippe III, 1598-1621 AD. The coin is indeed heavily counter-stamped.

PS. The diameter and weight also matched.

Without any actual expertise: is it not the aqueduct mintmark of the Segovia mint?

That aside, about it being a Spanish maravedis coin with a lot of counterstamps; the bottom of second side has a very visible VIII = 8 (maravedis) redenomination, implying that the original was probably 4.
The date - if it ever had one in the first place - is probably long gone under all the stamps.

I doubt those coins would have been very popular among pirates, who probably never cared much for copper; IIRC they are mostly peninsular issues.
They're from the right time period, though, so pirates could have used them (and to some extent probably did, as very small change).

Thanks for the addition information @january1may. It is handy to know about the aqueduct mintmark of the Segovia mint.

This coin has turned out to be a lot more interesting than I had first imagined.
