I am having a rather hard time trying to figure what happened here on the "1" of 1859. I would like to get your opinion of how the underlying slanted 1 occurred. Is it just an area affected by ejection damage? My first thought, but then the upright "1" seems it would be more distorted or much narrower in parts. Anyway, maybe you have an idea. I see no flattening effect on the other numbers. The arrow by the "9" was just to remind me to check it some more. Should have removed
Thanks for looking ,

Jim

That 1 digit is sure puzzling because I don't see shear on the other digits. [hmm] I'll mull this one over.

My thoughts also. I have been thinking on this one for somrtime, I am not sure what
type of ejection mechanism was used in 1859 and if it could only affect one digit. I
don't put post-mint damage as a high possibility due to surrounding areas.

I don't know the specific ejection mechanism either, but I do know they had their share of troubles minting the CuNi cents.
The shadow 1 looks very anomalous, but how the top of the 1 digit is missing suggests a shear/damage to me. If the 1 punch was actually broken, I'd guess the shadow would be broken too.
