WOW, that's a tough coin to find in mintstate.(MS-63/MS-64) I've been looking for an I.C.C.S., 1947 DOT nickel for the past 100 years. I.C.C.S. population reports has less than 70 listed in mintstate, therefore confirming how scarce and underrated this baby is!

to CCF.
With that kind of availability, I would think it is a hard one to find.

I've looked for one (unattributed) in any grade, so far without success.

Sorry to gloat, but I was lucky enough to find TWO in the same junk nickel box at my favorite dealer's store. They weren't in mint state, but pretty nice - around VF.

The dealer is a really nice guy to me, so when I found the first one, I looked really hard to find another one. After another 10 minutes of searching, I did!

He was amazed. I told him: you take one, I take one. I left with my choice, and he instantly carded the other for his showcase, with a $40 price tag.

My coin collector friends are furious I didn't try to sneak it out of there. But more relentless bin searching a few months later yielded a third, and so I now have a double.

They are out there. Look through a hundred 1947s, and you might find one!

I just bought a VF-20 for $21.60 at the Nuphilex show in Montreal last weekend. Trends puts a VF-20 '47 dot 5 cents at $40.00. I found dealers there quite willing to discount up to 40% off, perhaps due to the economy or slow sales.

That's a cool way to establish a relationship with a dealer; what goes around comes around.

Yes, they are very difficult to find in high grades, and unattributed.
