Picked up a lot of Farthings and 1/2 penny's Some of them appear to have some type of substance coating the surface. I am guessing varnish of similar. How do I go about removing it with out ruining the coin? These coins are at least 150 + years old. This is an example

Acetone will remove coatings such as varnish, grease, most dirt, etc.

But make sure you use pure acetone (see your nearby hardware store).
Nail polish has other stuff in it that will harm your coin.

And follow the handling instructions on the acetone container.
