Welcome to the forum.

I wonder if your token is/was(?) connected to the military? In some countries battalions were designated by Roman numerals and regiments by Arabic. So III/123 would have meant the third battalion of the 123rd regiment. Prussia used this system, Britain didn't. Did the USA?

This is only a suggestion and could be completely wrong. I look forward to any info from forum members.

As per above, looks to me like a WWI German canteen token - I've seen similar ones in brass from before the war (early 20thc). My guess yours is zinc due to wartime demand.

Indeed a Canteen token. It is from the 123 Infantry Regiment, 3d batallion located in the city of Ulm. It is listed in the Catalog of German tokens by Menzel (2018 edition). The entry in this catalog is shown
Zinc-Token?--III/123--Need-Help-Identifying

The token is valued at € 20 (about US$ 22)
