My father had a large coin collection, but sold it off before he died. After being sidelined by lupus, MS and now, two brain tumors - I started going on YouTube adventures in metal detecting, bottle hunting and all,the old pasttimes my dad and I enjoyed together.
That lead me to start thinking about coin collecting.
My daughter and son in law are historical performers in St Augustine, FL. It being "America's oldest city, they receive tip money in coinage from all over the world.
Mainly, they come in and throw it all into a jar. They never get around to rolling it, so I took over and I've been going through over $800 in pennies to dollar coins.
One thing has led to another and after watching the coin unrolling videos and studying some of the informative tutorials on. Low mintages, grading and error coins. I'm totally hooked!
I'm almost done with the first sorting phase of all that change, but it's been hard for me to throw back the grossiest, most worthless coins (except the "zincolns", hate them).
So glad to have found this forum where I can learn from others and ask questions, because the more I learn, the more I realize there's so much more!
This has been such a tonic and a joy to me, I just can't express it. I live with my daughter & family and our next project is picking out the very best of the state and national park quarters and working with my 7 yr. Old grandson to put them in map folders I bought.

Rhonda 9080: to the CCF!
I started coin collecting in my childhood.
Now, I collect two of the best examples of every coin design I can find, in all denominations from circulation.
Cost?
Face value.
After about 4 years, my collection now has about 300 coins in it, all in top condition.

If I need to spend them later on I still can, but I will find that hard to do, because I am still learning.
And now I am well over 70 years old,
and the CCF keeps me going during the COVID-19 lockdown.

Will such a collection ever be valuable?
I do not expect that it will ever have a value much above face value,
but that is not the point.

I do have a valuable coin collection covering the whole of numismatics, but I can't keep that going just now, due to the COVID-19 lockdown, but that is really not the point, either.

Welcome to the Community! I agree with the prior comments. An inexpensive device you might find helpful is a usb scope. I don't have a specific recommendation on one. Just make sure it will work with your particular computer or phone. It will enable you to see minute details that you might otherwise miss. Happy hunting!
