I'd never heard of these until I read the Numismatic News piece here:
http://www.statequarters.com/News/2006/021306.asp

You have if you've attended one of the official launch ceremonies for any of the 35 State Quarter dollars released into circulation. But you also watched history being made if you have attended one of the collectors' forums the U.S. Mint hosts.

The Mint was to continue a nearly five-year-old tradition Jan. 30 (just after Coin World's press deadline) when acting Mint Director David A. Lebryk planned to host a collectors' forum the day before the 2006 Nevada quarter was officially launched. The forum was scheduled for the Redfield Campus of Truckee Meadows Community College in Reno.

The forums began in 2002, shortly after former U.S. Mint Director Henrietta Holsman Fore took office.

Fore announced in late 2001 that she planned to meet with collectors and dealers at specific coin shows to make good on her nomination promise to reach out to the needs of the collecting community. Sessions normally feature a question-and-answer forum.

The forums are often where collectors encourage Mint officials to look for fresh designs and not resurrect the classical designs...

Sounds like a venue for us to let the mint know our wishes. Anyone know where they put forth a schedule for them/ Anyone hear of them berfore, or attend?

I plan to be in Denver when the Colorado quarter is released.

If a forum is planned, I'll be there.

Great article Don. I had no idea the mint cared for public input. Mike [:0]

If they are to have one it will more than likely be in Aspen! That is where the eastern people have their parties, isn't it?

I was at the forum at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the Indiana release. It was informative and they did listen to what was being said but I really feel, in the end, Congress are the jerks calling the shots.
I did get the autograph of the mint engraver ( Donna Weaver) who did the Indiana design on the official release program that was handed out before the ceremony. It was nice to chat with various officials but be prepared to stand in line for your turn!

Old Dan:

Yeah, Aspen.

I saw a map of the world recently, and for Colorado there were only two cities identified -- Denver and Aspen. Therefore there are a lot of people running around thinking that Aspen is important. Only if you have money to burn.

However, I might have felt differently about the Aspen area if my family history had turned out another way. My great grandfather owned several hundred acres at Snowmass. Had a large black angus cattle ranch there. Unfortunately, there was a divorce and my branch of the family moved to Glenwood Springs, and then Grand Junction. My grandfather became a railroad engineer and never received any of the land at Aspen.

Oh well, just as well. I probably wouldn't have been a good member of the Rich and Famous Club. Besides, if my life had changed I probably would never have found my wife, had our great kids and grandkids, etc., etc.

Terry,
Neat that you attended one of these. Makes one feel better about the mint, even if it doesn't change anything. Who knows, perhaps if enough folks say what they want-things will change. I know I am upset about getting shut out of the Franklin commem orders after only 10 days! while some put in large orders in hopes of making a profit.

Gary,
Always tough selling family land. My aunts and uncles sold land we had owned for 150 years not too long ago-but it was just too cumbersome with so many relatives and no one to take care of things...
