It sound like you're working on a US collection.
If so, I highly recommend getting a Red Book ("A Guide Book of United States coins").
You don't have to get a current one; a couple years old is okay since the important information wouldn't have changed.
And it won't hurt to get "The Official Numismatic Association Grading Standards for United States coins".
And Read! Read! Read!.
There is lots of free information online.
And ask lots of questions in here.
Most of us are more than willing to show off our numismatic knowledge.
And if you are in the Wash, DC area there are two coin shows you should visit.
One is in Vienna, VA about every other month; the other is in Annandale at the community college about twice a year.
Just leave your wallet at home until you get a feeling of what coin collecting is all about.
Old!?
I'm 78.
