Hello Everyone

I have decided to go to my grass roots (I am greek background) and collect Greek coins in the modern era.

The coins themselves don't cost much and therefore it's almost impossible to find them on ebay because it's not worth peoples time trying to sell modern drachmas/lepta

Even when someone is willing to sell a modern drachma it'll sell for 1 or 2 dollars but the shipping to Australia costs at least 15 dollars - Not worth it!

Is there an auction sites, a website, ANYTHING that can help me with my collection?

Thanking you all in advance.

DLM:- Do you still have any family connections back in Greece? If so, get them to send a list of dealers that trade in modern Greek coins. Then, try to establish a good working numismatic relationship with one or more of those dealers.
That may? prove be a way to avoid ebay problems.

For me,
as the opportunity arises, I will pick out high condition modern Greek coins from dealer's junk boxes at their shop or at coin shows. Sure saves the complications of eBay! Besides, you get to examine each coin before you buy it.

I regularly attend the 3 - monthly coin dealers' show at Petersham in Sydney, but I search across the whole of numismatics, looking for value for money cherry-picks, not just Greek coins, so that my visits are most often very worthwhile.
(Every 5th Sunday in the month, when there are 5 Sundays in the month, that happens 4 times per year.)

As my avatar attests, I am into ancient Greek as well.

Hi Sel

I am from Melbourne. Not that many coin fairs (only 2 big ones a year) - likely to not go ahead this year.

Trying to keep my hobby alive somehow. I was hoping the more scarce ones in the 1800's had specific auctions I could look at not just ebay.

I would go to the Numisbids website and create a "Want List." Then you will get e-mail notifications when the coins come up at an auction.

You could put specific coins on the list, or could even just put "Greece Lot" for more common coins.

Searching on CoinArchives for recent auction sales of modern Greece coin lots, I came up with things like these from European auction houses:
https://www.coinarchives.com/w/lotv...9b018007d954

https://www.coinarchives.com/w/lotv...803569aa0f39

You will pay an auction commission of 15-20% on top of the published price, and also pay shipping ... So you may want to shop for places with low shipping costs (or look for lots where your shipping cots is spread across a large number of coins).

Just a thought ...

DLM:- Pay a visit to Downies and Coinworks. They do auctions as well.
They are both based in Melbourne.
Although nothing going just now, ask them about Melbourne coin shows. Although both of them have their bread and butter business in modern 'bright 'n shinys', they may be able to give you a lead on modern Greek stuff.

I do have a few 19th and 20th Century Greek coins myself, but they do not figure prominently in my World collection, covering the last four centuries. I just buy on opportunity, when I see a good price.

well there is also swap sites (i think I cant say there sites?) however that most low end stuff there are a few top collectors in there, but they mostly going for modern proof EURO or silver from like the later 60s and onwards.

Numisbids is a great place they have loads of quantity items and grade item, however you do pay fair or market prices (reserves prices) sometimes a bargain in there too, that being said they are very good and are specialised in world coins with set themes, how do I say it no junk.

Still learning, would consider myself a newbie.
