I recently had a bad experience with PCGS and want to inform U.S. Medal collectors and collectors of odd sized coins of the poor encapsulation performed by PCGS to prevent potential damage to a coin.
So I recently purchased a few Washington medals that had be encapsulated by PCGS. When shipped all of them fell out of the gaskets and rattled against the inside of the holder. I contacted PCGS they happily agreed to try to fix the issue for free, which I was very happy and seems like the right thing to do.
Just received them back and the exact repeat of before, every single medal came out of the gasket. Put the old rattler holder to shame how much these medals rattle against the holder. Really a huge disappointment.
I contacted PCGS again, the reply I got was pretty much theres nothing they can do the medals are too thick and do not fit securely in any gasket. They offered to take them out of the holder but would not find a fix or reholder. Well I wasn't happy after emailing numerous times asking for them to find a fix and would wait for a proper gasket. I have more of these medals I want encapsulated in the future, I was just getting the runaround.
PCGS job is to grade and secure coins in a holder to preserve, they failed......miserably
I'm sure it's not easy to secure all sized coins in this world but they signed up for the job.
Hopefully they figure this out and no one else has to go through this.
Happy collecting!

Do you know if they have graded other examples of this medal

Yes, I have five of them three have fallen out the other two are barely hanging in. If I sent them in the mail again I'm sure they would fall out.
NGC did a good job encapsulating these and will just send the rest of my raw medals to them.

I can understand why PCGS and others may have difficulties in adapting a slabbing system to medals.

Medals can vary greatly in diameter, height of relief and thickness, and if a collector wants all of his medals slabbed to a standard slab size, there will be inevitable and unavoidable problems.

Ancient coins also present a range of problems for slabbing, although high end ancient coins tend to be auctioned in slabs in more recent times.

Perhaps a slabbing system can be devised to accommodate most medals and not just a few, but that will depend on commercial viability.
Pristine condition medals like coins, need protection.
The answer in how a medal is be protected cannot always be found in slabbing.

The way a medal is designed is not constrained by the needs of circulation, and is more an expression of art. Partly because of this, museums always display medals unslabbed, so that that they can be better appreciated by the visitor and that attitude appeals to my way of thinking.

It can be commercial viability and they have a poor coin holder design where they have to make tons of different gaskets not only different diameters but also for different thicknesses.
I really only see PCGS having a trouble probably securing medals with their current holder design.
If they take on a job they should do it properly and hold the standard they claim.

@Pennyroach: You should be careful generalizing your experience with this one particular medal to all medals graded by PCGS.

While it seems clear that their standard holder gasket is not compatible with the medal you have shown, I can state from personal experience that their standard gasket works fine for a large variety of medals that have been struck by the US Mint (and others), albeit for medals with thinner planchets.

I would also suggest that your issue would be resolved by requesting use of the PCGS oversized holder which can accommodate coins and medals struck on thicker planchets.

Hi Commems,
I really tried to get any holder that would secure the medals. Oversized and or regular, as long as the medals would be secure I'd be happy. It was a one and done deal unfortunately.
