A high chance it is a contemporary forgery - nothing wrong with that as by the time of the new coinage in 1797 there were more forgeries in circulation than genuine regal ones! The weight will be the best indicator for a coin in that state - the genuine ones should be over 9g, the fakes are anything from 7g upwards.
