how do you handle the proof so as not to smudge it or leave fignerprints? do you use a cloth, coin tongs, your bare hands, or what? I need to know the best way do I can make a nice transfer and keep the coins sparkling and clean.

I would use soft cotton gloves like these:

Always handle any coin by the rim, be it a proof or a business strike.

Like biokemist said, by the rim, wearing the gloves bman mentioned, with a pillow underneath in case you drop it!
