I am Canadian and a collector of Canadian coins so the question and the prize will reflect that.

The question is:

How many effigies of Queen Elizabeth II have appeared on circulating Canadian coins and what years were they introduced?

I think it is 5.
I also think that one can argue for 5 or six. I don't know Canadian coinage,
but there have been 4 basic portraits-the "young queen" (ponytail, crownless-53-64), her classic hairdo with simple crown (65-89), older, with more ornate crown (90-03), and present day crownless (03-present). There was a different portrait for the 50c 2002 golden jubilee depicting the young queen at her coronation. In addition other 02 coins used the 90-03 portrait but with 1952 over 2002.

I need a quick history lesson... why does Canada still depict England's queen on its currency? I've been curious about that!

Thanks,

Fun part about living monarchs - the coins can change with them.
How many different Lincolns do we see on the penny?

Hi Richard,
It is sorta neat. Personally, while I wish the US mint/congress would only change 1 design at a time ( State Quarters program is great, so is the nickel, but why not do the nickels when sq program ends- it's been 200 years since Jefferson was pres and Lewis and Clark explored the west-why not issue a commem and leave the circulating coinage alone for 4 more years), it is nice to see a diff Jefferson portrait. Monarchs are relatively apolitical figures in most of the developed world today, so its ok to put them on coins, IMO. Living poiticians are a different matter-too political. I feel the same about the recently dead ones-and feel that about say, both Johnson and Reagan. In 25 years it may be different..., and Kennedy was different too, because he was assasinated.

Realize you have a different opinion re presidents on coins, ND!

What guidelines would you like to see for the RAM to use re coinage? How do you feel about the coins with 2! monarchs such as the commem 1/2 sovereign?
Don
