Hello.

One of my favorite ongoing numismatic projects is acquiring pairs of American coins matched by variety, grade, mint mark, denomination, or designer (i.e. the 1817 large cent 13 and 15 star variety).

Here is one I just assembled: a pair of Christian Gobrecht designs, dated 1851, I have always found similar and attractive despite the difference in denomination, size, and material (I guess it's the hair style).

Would you agree these make a pair matched @ VF-20?

Not up on the latest grading of large & Half Cents but I'd say that a pure VF-20 would be pushing it a bit. I'd like a slightly less worn look.

I find comparing Gobrecht's designs fascinating. For 11 years, 1840-1850, Christian Gobrecht designed every single U.S. circulating coin. Not long ago I noticed that there are many subtle differences between denominations of Liberty Seated coins. Differences in hair style, locks over the right shoulder on some, but not others, different hand and shield positions, slightly different head orientations with Lady Liberty looking in a slightly different direction. Spotting the differences is like a numismatic game of where's Waldo.
Although the large cent and $5 (?) appear to have similar motifs, you can notice the same types of differences in your coins, The bangs, tresses at the neck and ear, facial orientation and expression are some. Your coins are great examples of Gobrecht's subtle distinctions customizing each of his coins.
From the obverse, I think the gold coin would grade 20 or 25. The cent appears more worn and could slip to 15.

A shot of the reverse of these would help.

Thanks for the good thoughts.

The quarter eagle is a new acquisition, the large cent I've had close to 25 years. I'm now so used to seeing raw large cents with environmental damage, uneven color, graffiti, and other woes, that I kind of focused on the clean face of this one rather than on the actual amount of wear! ;-)

I would say VF-25 for the gold, but only F-15 for the cent. Close enough, though. They match up fairly well together.

Hello
The 1852 looks like a gold Liberty Head $2.5 as I would in my opinion grade it AU low end very nice. I would not pair them. I maybe all wrong, you have a wonderful day and take care. May we see the reverse that would help.
Sincerely Bob
