Unknown Ancient Coin - Please Help - Coin Community Forum

ksammut Pillar of the Community United States 1003 Posts	Posted 05/20/2020 5:09 pm Hello everyone, Please excuse me, but I know absolutely nothing about Ancient coins. I probably know less than I think I do! But, I found this ancient coin in my collection the other day and was wondering what it was. It is a little less than 2.5 centimeters in diameter and weighs approximately 9.1 grams.It appears to be in good condition for a coin this old, but I'm not exactly sure who the ruler is, where it is from, the date, value, etc. I have included a picture of the original 2x2 I received it in, if it helps. Tanman2001 Pillar of the Community United States 4404 Posts	Posted 05/20/2020 5:19 pm Looks like a Gallienus Tetradrachm from Alexandria, Egypt. These are usually potin/billon. LIA on the reverse represents regnal year 11 (For Gallienus that's 263-264 AD). Obverse - AYT K Π ΛIK ΓAΛΛIHNOC CEB Laureate, draped, curaissed bust right. Reverse - LIA Eagle standing left, head right with wreath in its beak, palm branch to right. Report this Post to the Staff

These late-period Romano-Egyptian tetradrachms were basically made of scrap metal - whatever happened to be lying around the mint on the day. There's usually a trace amount of silver (less than 1%), and most of the rest is copper, but often with high amounts of lead, tin, iron and even sand. As such, they are highly prone to corrosion and degradation.
