Roman Coin Votive Reverse ID Help? - Coin Community Forum

I'm new to ancient coins, and I recently bought an "uncleaned" coin from what was apparently a hoard from a peat bog in southern Germany. The obverse legend is pretty unclear, though the obverse is a diademed bust right (I believe). On the back is a votive. The coin is 14-15mm in diameter. I'm guessing it's Constantius II, but it's a very frail guess. If any of the more experienced numismatists have any insights, I would love to hear it! Report this Post to the Staff

I haven't weighed it, as I don't have a scale. Would knowing the weight help with ID? I was under the impression that ancient coins have pretty different weights due to wear and the original amount of metal that was struck. I believe you are generally right but it looks like the Constans coins are much lighter than Constantius II. I am not particularly knowledgeable with Roman coins though so I could be misinformed. Victor Pillar of the Community United States 905 Posts	Posted 05/22/2020 3:13 pm there is no difference in weight between the Constans and Constantius II issues. Your best bet for ID is to look at the obverse legend and see if you can make out what the letter is before the break on the obverse. Constans will have an A or a T before the break -- D N CONSTA-NS P F AVG or D N CONST-ANS P F AVG while Constantius II will have an N like D N CONSTAN-TIVS P F AVG. If you can't make it out clearly, you can always try to count the letters before the break. Report this Post to the Staff
