My father left containers of old coins, and I'm helping my mom to sell them away. I found these three 50 francs coins from 1977, checked them online and decided that they seemed authentic. So I posted them online and sold them. I tried looking them up online again however, and I now realised that the edge of those coins seem off as compared to the pic on Numista. Plus! I realised that there are fakes available online.

Could someone tell me if they are real or fake? I don't want to be selling fake coins. I'm supposed to be sending them out tomorrow, and I need to check it fast.

I don't have a weighing scale with me unfortunately, but they are heavy coins. They are 4cm wide, slightly less than 3mm thick.

Thank you everyone in advance!

Those edges definitely look wrong. Checking the weight would be good, it should be very close to 30.0 g. But even if the weight would be correct, the edges make me believe they are fakes.

Thank you for your input. I don't want to take the risk, so I'm going to refund my buyer. The edges seem way too unpolished for such detailed coins.

Got to be extra careful from now on. It seem like my father wasn't very well-versed at his hobby (I've found many fakes in his collection beside these).

Hello TanyaTanya and

Here are the edges of some genuine 50-franc coins. I got these direct from the Monnaie de Paris in 1978 so I can vouch for their authenticity!

Sorry, not the best photos, but the symbols look a lot sharper than on yours.

The coins are supposed to be made of silver; I would bet that these are made of steel and stick strongly to a magnet. Correct?

numisrob: They are beautiful!

Sap: Nope. I don't know if it's because my magnet is weak (but it does pick up my small scissors).

Agreed with the above that the edges are wrong. The example at center is definitely fake - there is some sort of blistering over the surfaces at top - whether this is plate loss or a poorly prepared die, I cannot say from the pictures. If these are from the same source, I'd say you did well holding off on sending them!

norantyki: I don't know why I didn't think of that, but I shall look out for blistering on coins from now on. I've refunded my buyer and I'm glad I didn't sell these fake coins!

Numister: I found Straits Settlements/Malaya coins, older Malaysian coins, and assorted lower value, fairly recent coins from all over the world. Plus larger, seemingly very valuable coins, but I believe the majority of them are fake (I've already confirmed a number of them to be counterfeits).

jbuck: Thank you!

@NumisRob thanks for posting those clean and crisp edge photos. What a difference from the coins OP posted.

That's OK. I'm glad they were useful. Coin edges are quite hard to photograph!

Numister: Probably. Will have to take a closer look before selling them.

JGpenny: I only have an old phone to take photos and it was getting dark when I posted. So sorry I'm not that great at taking photos, but surely the details are clear enough?
