Here's a 1853 Half Cent I just got and an 1849 I'm thinking of getting. please give your opinion of grade, any details such as damage or cleaning, and guestimate on value.

I'll say EF-45+ and high VF details (environmental damage).

Coinfrog - would you mind telling what you see that keeps the 1853 out of AU territory? Not questioning your grading skills but mine - I have a lot to learn.

I love the 1853, it's very lustrous in hand, slightly darker than the photo but more even colored.

I decided against the 1849, no point getting a subpar coin even if it's relatively cheap.

your 53 is a nice coin. the denticles you note is typical for large cents and the coin has nice eye appeal. I'm at AU55 and I can see it in the $160 range retail

the 49 however does not fair as well. the coin is a VF details (ED) coin. if you are not familiar with details designation it used by grading services to denote a coin that will not a defined grade level to as something is wrong with it which most likely occurred post minting. in this case the ED is environmental damage. the coin is scratched up pretty good and has signs of corrosion on the surface which is post mint damage. it still has some value but since its a common coin not a whole lot
