Hey,
I'm not really a coin collector but I found this in my change yesterday and it caught my eye. It's really corroded and I can only make out a few letters. It is exactly the same diameter as a U.S. penny and the letters appear to be engraved rather than set out. The only word I can read on it says 'PLATE' (I think). Any help would be much appreciated.

I believe that it is an old two piece button.

The second piece, the loop would have been where the center mark shows.

Yep, it's a button - the central corroded pit was where the loop of the button was once attached. I believe "PLATE" is part of the word "PLATED" - button-makers apparently liked to advertise what kind of workmanship went into their product.
