Overstamp On Head Of William IV Sixpence

Hello forum,

I've been going through my old coin collection from when I was a kid and found the following William IV sixpence with the initials MB stamped over the bottom of the head. Can anyone explain the significance of this and tell me if this makes the coin rarer or more sellable than usual. Many thanks.

Thanks for that. I read through the topic but no definite answer. The theory that the stamped coins were used within a particular institution is compelling though.

Some counterstamps can increase the value of a coin, Ephraim Brasher's EB on foreign gold coins comes to mind. Most of them are considered damage and even to people who collect counterstamped coins they do not add much, if any, premium. Yours does have the look of a silversmith mark so you may want to do research on 19th century English hallmarks.
