Am currently sorting some 1939-1943 Italian 20 centisimi coins. Numista states that some are magnetic and others are non-magnetic. Some coins definitely stick to the magnet however other coins, although they stick to the magnet, only just hold and are easily removed. Are these magnetic coins that have lost some magnetism or does non-magnetic mean 'almost' non-magnetic? Ta
They are both steel, just with different structures. Austenitic Stainless Steel is "mostly" non-magnetic. Formations of ferrite can make the steel partially magnetic. IF there is a weight difference is would be negligible.
Nickel is mildly magnetic and MANY modern coins are struck in cupronickel. I believe that niobium magnets are VERY strong and will work well on cupronickel coins. Also I think cobalt is mildly magnet.
Ah. The plot thickens. From memory there was no weight difference. I will stick weakly magnetic being the same as non-magnetic. Thanks for the responces.
