Just out of curiosity, what conditions would give a silver coin (say an 1850 half) an even gold toning on both obverse and reverse? Any ideas? Thanks.

It could be sulfides from a brown paper envelope.

I've tried the sulphur and alcohol experiment on .900 US quarters...
just keep wiping the black gunk off from time to time till the desired tone appears.

Now,now... I know I'm new here and artificial toning is blasphemous and all, but 'tiss fun to experiment

Or it could have been stored in an old Wayte Raymond album.

Those old albums were made with sulphur, and leave great toning after years of storage.

Just experiment. Find a few old, beat up Silver coins and try things. I've been doing that for about 60 years. The problem is in using just around the house, safe, cheap items for an attempt on toning a coin. Purchasing solutions could be expensive and dangerous. Here are some things I've tried over the years.
Hard Boil and egg. Place your coin(s) in a plastic bag with a the hard boiled egg smashed up for a few days. Check periodically.
Try the same with a chopped up Onion and/or Garlic.
Where you put them also has an effect. Outside in the sun, inside a refrigerator, on a window, etc. Temperature and humidity and time all make a difference.
Then there is the old match head, crushed into a powder, add a little water, place in a plastic bag with the coin(s). Check frequently.
Other household items may or may not work such as Mineral Spirits, Vinegar, perfumes or a Swanson TV Dinner. Do not eat the TV Dinner if you placed coins in them. Not real good for the coins if swallowed. Also, do not place a TV Dinner in a microwave oven with Silver coins in them. Also, not good for the coins and microwave.
The main thing to remember is that temperatures, humidity, time all play a part of toning.
