I have been putting together a Dansco 7070 type set, and have been purchasing slabbed coins almost exclusively for all the non-modern (pre 1965) coins. Well, I took a chance and bought a raw 1846 seated liberty silver dollar from ebay. It was advertised as Extra Fine and weighing in at 26.7g. (perfect weight for the coin) I do not know if I am being paranoid or not, but with it being my first raw purchase I'm afraid of being duped. I have a scale I use for weighing silver bullion (only measures to .1 of a gram.) So its not the most precise, but works for silver stacking. I weighed this coin, and at first it weighed 26.9g, and instantly thought I had been duped because I have read the tolerance is only .097g. I lifted it up and placed it on the scale again, and it weighed 26.8g for 3 or 4 seconds and then changed to 26.9g again. It leads me to believe it is somewhere between 26.85g-26.9g. Pictures I took of the coin are below. I think it was cleaned maybe? Is it Real? Is it XF? Did I overpay at $425? Thanks Edited by shadesony 06/27/2020 09:21 am

I would grade this VF-30, or possibly 35 at best. Somewhat concerned that the obverse (at least) may have been cleaned at some point. to the CCF!

surface preservation and eye appeal is on the lower side. obverse VF30 reverse VF35. the obverse bothers me as will. not sure she would grade straight. definitely not XF

I'm guessing your pics represent the coins color better?
Horrible seller pics. Too much flashback, bad angle, and they scream" this coins been cleaned". Looks like he was trying to mask the surfaces and try to get some faux luster there.
That being said, Based on your pics, I would say it had an older cleaning but would straight grade at what others have said, VF30-35. Price is a bit more than I would have paid for this one, given its surfaces and eye appeal, but not OVERPRICED. Just my opinion.

Quote: I'm guessing your pics represent the coins color better? I took them with natural light and made sure they were not blurry. Was all I was concerned with for the most part. I guess my pics are representative of someone not trying to hide anything, lol

Uncleaned, that coin would go for around $550 or so.. so I think you paid a fair price...

It looks like an OC-1 die marriage and VF Details.

To be completely thorough... Below are two additional pictures I just took as the coin currently sits. In the coin album under florescent light.

The last pic helps. Revise my guess to borderline xf, technically a little too much wear on liberty but close. Looks good in an album, a fine example of type.

CDN retail price for VF35 is $494, $572 for XF40 so I'd say you paid a fair price.

I had to used PCGS Photograde to get a better comparison, it appeared to be in VF-25 obverse and VF-30 reverse. Price you paid for are fair.
