Good afternoon everyone
This is my first ever post on here. Although I am now 77 I used to sell antiques 40 years ago and be interested in all items of antiquity. I recently found in my 'man drawer' an ancient looking coin which appears to be of Syracusan origin depicting 'Arethusa' and on the obverse side a quadriga. Now I understand that the original coins were made of silver and this appears to be silver plated on a base metal. So I suspect that this may NOT be an original from 400BC. However IF it is, it would help my daughter who is expecting twins to buy a bigger place!
Can anyone enlighten me please? I would be very grateful to you. Thank you in advance. Even if it is a copy can anyone hazard a date of production and does it have any sort of value?

It's a tourist trinket
The silver plate alone indicates
How old ?
Who knows
Bit it definitely was not made with any evil intent to deceive anyone familiar with the subject
The rim around the edge is something that ancient coins generally lacked and machine made coins would have
Worth a dollar I suppose as a novelty

Yes, thank you for your knowledgeable input. The rim around the edge is a reliable indicator of modernity obviously.
Thank you for your very valid comments.

That particular coin is one of the most desirable and valuable coins among ancients. But you can buy authentic ancients for much less - often for a few pounds. Most of us collect in the $25-100 range and you would be surprised what you can get in that range.

You also happen to live in one of the best places - the UK - for the hobby. Your detectorists are always digging up stuff from people's gardens.
Take a visit to your local coin shop.

Thank you JSKirwin. for your helpful instinct and insight! It is true that there is a lot of interest where I live in West Sussex among detectorists and only the other day I learnt that someone had uncovered 2 silver coins from the reign of Charles 2nd. Whereabout in the states do you live? In my particular area there is a lot of Roman connections and remains. Thanks again for your advice.
