NGC - Coin of the Day: July 28 is Fiestas Patrias in Peru, commemorating the South American nation's 1821 independence. This Peru 1822 Eight Reales was part of the new nation's provisional coinage.

I'm a bit surprised about this.

The British Museum has a good collection of independence silver medallions for some South American countries.
Some were on the same standard as the silver coinage but others were a bit lighter.
The prevailing view in the mid-1970s was that these were medallions not coins and not intended to be used as currency.

Has this changed ?
