NGC - Coin of the Day: July 28 is Fiestas Patrias in Peru, commemorating the South American nation's 1821 independence. This Peru 1822 Eight Reales was part of the new nation's provisional coinage.
The British Museum has a good collection of independence silver medallions for some South American countries. Some were on the same standard as the silver coinage but others were a bit lighter. The prevailing view in the mid-1970s was that these were medallions not coins and not intended to be used as currency.
