I checked the pics on several sites but did not see any pennies of this date with the D so close to the 9. Is this something odd or did I miss a pic or two. After looking at it again it may just be the 9 is extra wide?

Mint marks were hand punched into the dies until 1989.

Sometimes they went walk-about.
