I have a 1985 shiny black penny that is in perfect condition. It doesn't have any oxidization or corrosion. I'm wondering its worth and why it's black.

I'm thinking probably plated or environmental damage

Hi Pennyhoarder1984,

I do a lot of coin roll hunting and I have found a few dark cents. I keep them if they are shiny and appear smooth. A metal-detecting coin can get black (or green, or whatever)in a hurry.

I'm guessing environmental damage (well I know environmental - it didn't come from the mint like this)

I keep them myself, unless they are obvious dug coins.

"Back in the day" some collectors felt rubbing gun oil of their coins would help to preserve them, so I've read. To me this coin does not have the look of a buried coin. With the absence of apparent wear on this cent, it could be environmental damage, but I'm thinking more intentional manipulation, deliberate post mint damage.

to the CCF!
