coin appears to have been spooned, whereas, someone has taken the time to beat down the edge of the coin..

Or anything that repeatedly banged on the edge. Sometimes these are called Dryer Coins (tumbled around in a commercial dryer) - but those tend to have hits on the faces too (tumbling isn't only on the edge). Silver Dollars that were used in slot machines for several years have the same look.
