I decided to send the Junk Dollar to PCGS, along with some other coins I was stockpiling. Hopefully they disagree with NGC and say it's authentic, but I will have to wait and see. I will update you all when it arrives. I have my fingers crossed!

@gxseries - Unfortunately I do not have a picture of the edge. It was reeded, if that helps. (And there was no seam or anything like that)

Consistency and evenness of the reeding can lend support to authenticity.

ksammut - it is not the seam that I'm interested in. It is how the edge appears - this is somewhat difficult to explain and I'll rather not provide details to educate the counterfeiters.

@gxseries - The edge looked normal to me, but unfortunately I can't get anymore pictures since I have already sent it in to PCGS. Now I'll play the waiting (and hoping) game and update you all on the outcome. Thanks!

Just an update - the Junk Dollar was deemed authentic by PCGS and came back AU58. Although the grade is a little lower than I thought it would be (the pictures make the coin appear really nice), I'm happy that it is real.

I don't believe that one can tell a 1949 United States restrike of a boat dollar from an original 1934 coin.

But if a grading company could tell the difference, then a restrike of a boat dollar shouldn't be called "questionable authenticity" but "restrike".

The 1949 restrikes of the 1898 Mexico Peso are labeled by grading companies as "restrike".
