I have 13 coins I'm working on with double portraits facing each other(such as Gordian III and Tranquillina). Was it common amongst many emperors to mint coins of that sort?

Yep. "Confronted busts" in the obverse design field in the advanced search function at Roman Provincial Coinage Online results in 566 coins with people nearly rubbing noses.
