I've got 2 really nice 1912-H pennies, grade and strike appears to be pretty identical, but the eye appeal is not.
I guess this brings back the whole discussion of luster vs. patina... but I need help deciding which to keep in my collection and which to sell. I was pretty set on the darker one, but now I can't make up my mind at all!

Thanks guys/gals!

what does the rest of your set look like? I would chose the one that is most like the others in the set.

bmanofnbc - That's an interesting way of looking at it. Unfortunately I don't have many coins with a similar eye appeal... some red, some brown, some bluish... glossy and not... all over the place =)

Scott - the rainbow tone is what caught my eye in the first place =D Thanks for contributing!

The one on the left - it could be my eyes playing tricks on me but it seems that
the darker one has weaknesses on the reverse side portrait of Britannia.

Hey Matty, I looked at it a little better and yes your eyes are spot on. The left shoulder and breast look to be fuller on the left coin.
Does that make a significant value difference?

while we're on the topic of striking,
Here's one of the boldest struck effigies I've ever come across, but the reverse still has that typical flatness to the left breast and shoulder. Same thing is true for my Edward VII pennies. Is there some reason that the striking on these coins differs so much between either side? Doesn't appear to be concave or convex to me.

I think it does affect difference because to me this is all evidence of wear. the more detail, the higher
the grade - I don't know much about striking or whether it matters? I would just just by sharpness of details
and not care of what kind if a strike it had been. Sorry I cannot answer your questions about striking I just
don't know that much about them - the coins do have a sunken look to them and this is a normal feature of the pennies
of this period.
