Unusual 1917 Half Penny - Coin Community Forum

shaneyz New Member New Zealand 1 Posts	Posted 08/05/2020 10:48 pm I have a 1917 Australian half penny in silver? These were never made in silver as far as I am aware. All details on the bust look perfect and its weight is 5.644 grams which is a perfect weight match to the one shilling coin which was silver. Could this have been minted with a one shilling blank? Or is it a really detailed fake? If so why would you replicate a 1917 and in silver? Report this Post to the Staff

ryurazu Pillar of the Community Australia 1333 Posts	Posted 08/06/2020 12:36 am mostly likely plated silver/ silver polish, that's the exact weight for half penny 5.67 grams, as for a shilling 5.65 grams and normally and are all silver all the way though note reeded edges. Sap Moderator Australia 16827 Posts	Posted 08/09/2020 10:35 pm People back in the day used to paint copper coins silver, in the hope of passing them off as a higher-denomination coin (in the case of a penny, probably a florin). Doing so was, and technically still is, illegal. But it was a "quick and dirty" way to attempt to produce a counterfeit coin.
